It’s official…I have finally had it with Hollywood remakes! What is happening in the film and television industry? Are the writers just that incompetent and lazy or have they run out of original ideas? Is Hollywood allergic to individualism? A couple of remakes a year is normal, but every time I turn around, someone’s doing a remake of a film or television show from the 70s or 80s. I mean I love Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, but that Miami Vice remake sucked hard! Don’t get me wrong…I think some remakes have actually done the originals justice. Scorsese’s remake of Cape Fear starring DeNiro and Nolte was an absolute masterpiece and I like it as much as I like the original starring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum. But did we really need Stiller and Wilson as Starsky and Hutch with Snoop Dogg as Huggy Bear? Was it necessary to have Danes, Epps and Ribisi as the new Mod Squad? I’ve recently heard that there will be a remake of Karate Kid and I almost puked. I loved the Karate Kid, but do we really need a remake? It’s not Shakespeare, people. Transformers doesn’t count because the original was a cartoon and I believe the film actually added to its legacy, but Adventures in Babysitting starring Miley Cyrus? Really? Total Recall without the Governator? Seriously? Footloose starring Zac Efron? I’m gagging just thinking about it. Give me a break! And the person who came up with the idea to remake Clue should be burned at the stake or stoned to death or both. I mean there are so many writers out there with good ideas who have not been given the opportunity to make their films. The moral of this rant is if you want to see a good original film, you should probably stick with the independents.
