“If you’re reading this its too late”

By: Bishop Nesby

Toronto rapper Drake, decided to channel his inner Beyoncé Friday night by releasing an album unannounced. With his fourth studio album “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” Drake has the interview going insane. However it is just sad that all of the hype behind this album is nothing more than smoke and mirrors.

The album opens with the intro song “Legend” which features Drake rhyming over a sample of R&B singer Ginuwine’s song “So Anxious”. As much as I like the sample, I can’t say that Drake did his thing. The song is tolerable at best.

Unfortunately, the next few songs are just as forgettable as the intro. The second song “Energy” has Drake rhyming about his so called enemies trying to drain his energy, while “10 Bands” features the typical braggadocios and materialistic subject matter that we have become accustomed to.

The rest of this album serves as lack-luster shuffle music. To be honest this album did not catch my attention until the song “You and The 6” which is the second to last song. “You & The 6” serves as a letter to Drake’s mother on how she and the city Toronto raised him. Interestingly enough, the best three songs on this album are the last three: “You & The 6”, “Jungle” (where Drake doesn’t even rap) and the bonus song “6pm In New York”.

All and all this album is barely tolerable. It sounds like Drake just did a bunch of songs to go party to and called it an album. This is by far Drake’s worst project. The songs that are good are really good, but they are not good enough to save this album.
