“The Documentary 2” by The Game

The year 2015 marks the 10 year anniversary of when hip hop legend The Game released one of the most quintessential rap albums of the early 2000’s, “The Documentary”. The album boosted Game’s career and captured the culture of a whole decade serving as the epitome of hip hop at the time. In honor of the album that brought us hits like “How We Do” and “West Side Story”, The Game released the long awaited sequel, “The Documentary 2.” Game stays true to his roots rhyming over west coast beats reminiscent of hip hop of the decade with a plethora of features including new acts Kendrick Lamar, Ab-soul and Drake as well as veterans such as Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Diddy.

The album opens with a skit of The Game getting into a heated argument transitioning into “On Me,” a track featuring Kendrick Lamar that samples Erykah Badu’s, “On on On.”. Game and Kendrick shine on this song as they discuss the harsh reality of living in Compton. The song flows directly into “Step up”, which features Dej Loaf and samples “Step Up” by Pete Rock and lnl. The next few songs after this, “Don’t Trip”, “Standing on Ferraris”, and “Things Done Changed” all follow a 90’s theme serving as the bread and butter of the album for classic hip hop lovers.

Halfway through the album Game includes another skit which acts as an intermission transitioning to more contemporary hip hop beginning with the song, “Dedicated,” featuring Future. The song is a less than stellar moment in the album, as Future’s monotone singing holds the song back from its potential.
