I am probably one of Prince's biggest fans, but I was a bit perturbed when I realized that he didn't allow his videos to be viewed on Youtube.

I am probably one of Prince’s biggest fans, but I was a bit perturbed when I realized that he didn’t allow his videos to be viewed on Youtube. The whole experience brought back memories of Metallica suing Napster. Now, I must say that artists deserve to get paid for their work. Period, point blank. However, Prince not allowing videos that are 15 or more years old to be viewed on Youtube reminds us of how big a control freak he really is. Not only has he prohibited his own videos, but he has also prohibited videos by artists who have recorded or covered material he wrote and still has the publishing rights to. So songs by The Time, Appolonia 6, Vanity 6, Sheila E., Chaka Khan an others are not available on Youtube. When people post these videos or even just the songs, they’re removed pretty quickly. The truth is that Prince’s albums from the late 70s, 80s and early 90s have generated more revenue for him than he, his children and his grandchildren would ever be able to spend. So why did Prince feel the need to set up his own web site and charge a monthly fee for people to view his videos? To make money of course. Youtube is a huge marketing machine and maybe, just maybe watching an old video would prompt the viewer to buy music that he or she doesn’t already own. As I mentioned before, this issue has reminded me of how angry people were with Metallica for suing Napster. In all honesty, Napster was just an extension of a practice that was prevalent in the 80s and 90s. Many people bought their favorite artists’ cassettes or CDs and used a boom box to make copies for their friends. This practice was prohibited as well, but people still did it. How many people recorded songs off the radio or recorded videos off the television? I plead the 5th on that one, but you get the picture. Metallica’s situation is more understandable than Prince’s, though. There are many artists, signed and unsigned, who use Youtube, Myspace, Facebook and other networking sites to promote themselves and their music, so there is probably no right or wrong answer to this question. Do musicians have the right to prohibit their videos from being shown on Youtube? Absolutely. But more importantly, will these artists exercising their right to do so cost them fans? Probably.

Okay maybe not death, but a temporary moratorium.

Okay maybe not death, but a temporary moratorium. I would first like to say that I’m all for technological advancements in music, but this Auto-Tune thing is out of control. Even Jay-Z has a song called “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)” which has prompted several responses. When T-Pain first used Auto-Tune as he was breaking into the industry, it was unique. Now it’s overused. The problem with the use of Auto-Tune is that when someone, like T-Pain, uses it and is successful, everyone else just jumps on the bandwagon. Originality and individuality are out the window. If Auto-Tune is used to accentuate an artist’s proven talent, then maybe it’s okay, but if a person can’t sing, and I’ve heard T-Pain sing live, and he or she uses Auto-Tune in place of real talent, that is a problem. Part of the problem is that there are only a handful of producers making music for these artists so the songs played on the Top 40 stations are going to undoubtedly sound remarkably similar. There have been many technological advancements in recorded music including the electric guitar and synthesizer. These advancements have not always been met with approval by music purists. For instance, the synthesizer was met with criticism from some musicians who felt that it was not a legitimate instrument. In the meantime, credible artists like David Bowie, Pete Townshend of The Who, Stevie Wonder and Peter Gabriel were experimenting with the synthesizer in the 70s and having success. The difference is that each of these artists who utilized the synthesizer sounded vastly different from each other. Each artist used the instrument in a unique way. By this time, these artists had already proven their musical abilities for ten years or more before using the synthesizer. Artists must have the freedom to experiment in their music, but experiment does not mean copy. The vocoder, used by artists like Roger Troutman, Madonna and Pink Floyd has been around for many years and artists have had success with it, but again these are artists who have already proven their abilities. The bottom line is that the use of new technologies is par for the course in the industry, but artists should try to do something different with the technology than the artists who have used it before. Besides, any technology that will enable Kim Zolciak of The Real Housewives of Atlanta to have a dance hit on the charts should be thoroughly examined. Miss Jackson has spoken!

There was a time when I actually liked Kanye West.

Believe it or not, there was a time when I actually liked Kanye West. I was one of the millions who bought the College Dropout CD and it actually renewed my faith in hip-hop. For the first time in a long time, I could listen to a CD without only hearing about women, money, cars and guns. It was intelligent, interesting and reminded me of hip-hop royalty like KRS-One, Public Enemy and Rakim. But after a year or two, I noticed a change in him that I did not like. He seemed to be caught on camera, quite often, giving himself props. Whether it was an award he felt he unjustly lost to someone else or just blowing a bunch of hot air about how great he is, nobody was more impressed with Kanye than Kanye. If he won three awards at a show, he complained because he didn’t win four or five. My respect for him as an artist began to diminish. Now, don’t get me wrong…I appreciate confidence in people. We live in a world that is constantly sending us messages that we’re not good enough. People have no problem going on reality shows and making absolute fools of themselves just for their 15 minutes of fame. We’re constantly comparing ourselves to other people physically, financially and in other ways. Not everyone can look like Denzel, Halle, Scarlet or Brad and not everyone can have the bank account of Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. Not everyone is born with the artistic genius of a Prince or Stevie Wonder. There is a constant stream of reality shows about makeovers and plastic surgery and some creep is always peddling a “get-rich-quick” scheme on an infomercial. It is difficult to live in this society and feel good about yourself. Even people who are beautiful and/or rich are often insecure about who they are. How many of us were shocked to learn that Halle Berry was in an abusive relationship? How many of us were shocked that any man, never mind TWO, would ever divorce her? Who in the world do you cheat on Halle Berry with?! Having said that, anyone who can keep his or her self-esteem intact gets much respect from me. However, arrogance in anyone is very unattractive to me. Let’s be honest…the people who have the most in society aren’t always the best and the smartest. Perhaps, they were just in the right place at the right time. Maybe there’s someone out there who is just as talented as Kanye West who just didn’t get the break he or she needed. Maybe there’s a singer/dancer out there who’s better than Beyonce, but she just couldn’t get to the American Idol auditions. Could there be someone out there who is smarter and has better ideas than Bill Gates, but couldn’t afford to bring those ideas to life? Absolutely! Now, an artist, especially in hip-hop, should have a certain amount of “swagger”, but that swagger should be balanced with humility when the artist isn’t performing. Talking smack on a song is different than talking smack (that you really believe) into a microphone on a red carpet. Needless to say, I haven’t bought anymore of Kanye’s CDs. The truth is that I would never date or be friends with an egomaniac and I won’t be spending my hard-earned money to support one…Miss Jackson has spoken! See you guys next week!
