Of course this adds the problem of never being able to escape those Farmville Notifications. But you can always shut them off in the settings.

Today the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has just upheld a decision that would see Microsoft Word and Office banned from sale starting January 11. As you may know, Microsoft lost a patent infringement suit against XML specialists i4i back in May when it was found that Word’s handling of .xml, .docx, and .docm files infringed upon i4i’s patented XML handling algorithms, but the injunction against further Word sales was put on hold pending the results of this appeal. Now that Microsoft has lost once again, we’d expect either another appeal and request for the injunction or for a settlement between these two that would end this nonsense right now.

And for those of you who think i4i is just trying to make a quick buck. It’s not it’s a database design company that shipped one of the first XML plugins for Office and revamped the entire USPTO database around XML to make it compatible with Word back in 2000. Also, the patents don’t cover XML its self but the specific algorithms used to create and edit XML code.

Personally I think Ballmer should just pay up and quit fighting it, but that’s just me.

Update: Microsoft has moved quickly and now plans to release XML free versions of Office 2007 in order to circumvent the court decision.

As you may have heard last week Facebook and Google each launched their own URL Shortening services, Fb.me and Goo.gl respectively. Today Youtube decided to join the ever-growing snowball of URL shorteners on the interwebs by launching their own Youtu.be URLs.

The one redeeming factor of this service is that Youtu.be URLs can only be used for YouTube videos making it tougher for spammers to trick people with fake Video Links. This is possible because each Youtu.be URL is paired with an unique YouTube Video ID The Part after the “v=” in regular YouTube Links. And while this allows for greater security and ease of analytics it adds some length to a “Short” URL about 7 characters more than the average Bit.ly Link, and in cases where every Character counts (Twitter) this could make or break the service.

(Via The YouTube Blog)
