High expectations and anticipation awaits President Barack Obama as he delivers his first State of the Union address on Wednesday, January 27. From the continued battle for healthcare reform to the still sluggish economy, President Obama has an immense job this week, he must convince the American people that the administration has not been weakened by what’s been perceived as several serious setbacks. Many feel the loss of Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat was a huge referendum on the first year of the Obama White House and the lack of progress seen in Congress. The American people are upset and they want answers from the man sent to the White House a year ago to “change” Washington.

Unfortunately, throughout Obama’s first year, the economy remained sluggish, and while the stock market boomed, jobs losses continued. Republicans, despite their large disadvantage in both houses of Congress, successfully prevented healthcare reform from passing (Teabaggers, raucous town halls and the inability of Congressional Democrats to get their act together didn’t help) derailing President Obama’s main objective for 2009.

This has all led to disastrous expectations for Democrats in the upcoming midterm elections. Wednesday is a turning point for President Obama and his leadership of the United States. His tone markedly changed last week at a speech in Ohio discussing jobs. Gone was the stoic “President Obama” of the last year and “Candidate Obama” made a magnificent return. With David Plouffe (Obama’s 2008 campaign manager) back in the fold, it would be unwise to write-off this Presidency after the rough first year. Let’s not forget, it’s been since 1993 that we’ve had a traditional first-year president. President George W. Bush’s first year can hardly be considered traditional following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

It’s sink or swim for the Obama Administration on Wednesday and to think they’re simply going to sink, allowing for a major victory by the G.O.P. this November would be unwise. President Obama was written off several times as a candidate and yet it is Obama that sits in the Oval Office, not one of his 2008 challengers. Hang onto your seats America, grab the popcorn and get ready, Wednesday night should be on hell of a show.

For a detailed preview of Wednesday’s State of the Union, tune into the Political Prescription, Tuesday from 3-5PM as Dr. J and Captain Kevin get into what President Obama needs to do to get it all back on track.

Hello dear listeners! I hope you are all enjoying your break and the Holidays! The Political Prescription is on its winter hiatus but I just wanted to take a moment to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We’ll be back at the start of the Spring semester for what will be the final season of the Political Prescription.

It’s been a wild year from the inauguration of President Obama, the fight over the stimulus package, healthcare, Afghanistan, all keeping us on our toes in this final year of the Naughts (the 00s). There were surprises , shocks and through these tough times we learned to laugh and smile at the simple things in life. If anything, 2009 taught us that simpler times can be tough, yet so rewarding. So for this Holiday season, despite the Senate being locked in by the healthcare battle, put politics aside, spend time with family and friends to truly appreciate how precious life is during these tough times.

Thank you all for listening to the rants of Dr. J and Captain Kevin this past year, it’s been a blast getting to feel your ears with political meds and we can’t wait to continue the trend this Spring. Have a wonderful Holidays everybody, enjoy the end of the year, decade and get ready for the start of something great and fresh…. a new decade. See you in 2010 folks.

With Love,

Dr. J

Apparently former Alaska governor Sarah Palin released a book last week. It’s filled with incredible policy positions, and details how exactly she’d run the country if elected President. She gives all of her plans for healthcare, the economy, foreign policy (including how to win in both Iraq & Afghanistan), social issues and all the positions a candidate needs to lay out in order to be President…. YEAH RIGHT!!!

Palin’s book is simply a tell all juice-fest on how the McCain campaign didn’t let Sarah be Sarah, but some pundits (namely Rush Limbaugh) find it to be a look into Palin’s policy positions. He said something along the lines that “Going Rogue” is one of the best books on policy he’s ever read… Sure. Well to demonstrate just how awesomely ridiculous Palin supporters are, check out this video. I can’t wait to see her debate the likes of conservative heavyweights like Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and Darth Vader. Should be a blast. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

President Obama just completed his lengthy journey across the pond for a series of meetings in Europe. Obama returned to the United States after making a surprise visit to Baghdad to visit with U.S. troops and discuss progress in Iraq.

What do you think of the President’s first trip abroad and was he successful in hammering out policies?

Will meetings with the G20 and NATO lead to a rebuilt world economy and help rebuild America’s reputation abroad?

Only time will tell so discuss amongst yourselves here on the blog and then tune into the Political Prescription TOMORROW (4/9) 3-5PM for all the latest in political news that leans slightly.

A Happy Passover and Easter to those out there celebrating, and to everyone else, enjoy the warming weather and the start of baseball season (how about those Braves?!)!

Prescribers,

It may have taken those of you who follow the stock market a bit by surprise today to learn not only did the Dow Jones Industrial index zoom up by nearly 500 points, but on what news caused such a glorious reaction on Wall Street. The Obama Administration announced last week that the government would be buying up nearly $1 trillion (yes, you read that right) in bad assets. They feel this will allow lending to open up and get credit flowing again.

What did you think about this and will it work? Investors sure feel that way and Treasury Secretary Tim Geitner sure hopes so. Keep an eye on the market this week and be ready for a full discussion on Thursday during the Political Prescription. Until then…

P.S. I am also now Twittering. While these posts may have nothing to do with politics, you might be entertained by Dr. J’s ramblings. Find me here.

Spring Break has arrived and with it sadly comes a week off from the Political Prescription. Never fear however, Dr. J has provided an excellent editorial concerning the conservative movement here in the United States. Yes it’s from the AJC, yes it’s from one of their liberal editorialists (Jay Bookman), but it’s a damn good one.

Whether you’re a liberal or conservative, check it out, it may just help you avoid the current pit the conservatives find themselves in these days in the United States.

Here is a brief excerpt to whet your appetites:

As we saw over the last eight years, a movement tends to lose discipline and sense of mission once it achieves power. It becomes what it was trying to change, a phenomenon that has repeated time and again. It happened to Republicans, it happened in the French Revolution, it happens always.

In other more entertaining news , it seems people can’t help but bringing weapons to the Capitol building. Yes, Congress may suck sometimes, but bringing guns and swords aren’t going to help you get your Congressman to do what you want. Try voting and actually participating in the American political system.

Enjoy folks and don’t forget to tune into the Political Prescription, back at its regular time, 3-5PM on March 19th only on KSU Owl Radio.
