The progressives have come up with an alternative to the Tea Party movement. They call in the Coffee Party – how clever. Get it? It’s another hot drink. But we have to come up with something to call them that’s as offending as Tea Baggers, right? How about Coffee Pot-Heads? Or Coffee Muggers – in the sense that they want to use the government to steal from some to give to others.

Comment with suggestions.

Click here to view the embedded video.

On their website, in the About us section, it says:

We want a society in which democracy is treated as sacrosanct and ordinary citizens participate out of a sense of civic duty, civic pride, and a desire to contribute to society.

This statement is very reminiscent of the Anti-Federalists. They believed that America needed to be a pure democracy in which every citizen participated. They also believed that property should be equally distributed. They continue:

Our Founding Fathers and Mothers gave us an enduring gift — Democracy — and we must use it to meet the challenges that we face as a nation.

Our founding fathers (and mothers? who?) did not give us democracy. They wanted to save us from the tyranny of democratic rule. In the Federalist Papers, Hamilton and Madison warned about the dangers of direct democracies. They argued that the rights of the minority are subject to the majority in a democracy, not to a set of principles or laws which protect their rights (i.e., the Constitution).

Our government is designed to ensure that the neither the majority nor the minority has complete power. The separation of powers, system of federalism, checks and balances, and bicameral legislature were designed to prevent majority factions from taking control of the entire government.

The Coffee Party talks a lot about obstructionism. The founders wanted to make sure that the minority party could obstruct the majority.

The video also talks a lot about “progress” and the desire for government to “work” again. Yet, they don’t define progress. Does progress mean that the government gives you things like health care and affordable housing? If so, then I ask, at whose expense? What right do you have to the productivity of others? Do you own the work and education of doctors who you ask to give you free health care? If you believe that health care is a right, you concede that you own the lives of those in the health care industry.

The founding fathers not only feared a tyrannical government. They also feared a tyranny of a mob that can take away the property and rights of those they demonize.

I hope this Coffee Party does some homework to realize that a.) America is not a democracy and b.) Their platform is more similar to the Anti-Federalists than the Founding Fathers.

At the same time, I hope the Tea Party has done this too.
