Last weekend the Kennesaw State Owl’s volleyball team took a big step as they won the 2013 Owls Invitational in the Convocation Center. It was their first tournament championship under the direction of their coach, Keith Schunzel. It required them to go on a 4-0 run, which brought their record back to .500 at 5-5. Junior Keyaira Stevenson led the owls through the course of the tournament with 19 kills, and Freshmen Kelly Marcinek added in 12 of her own.
To add to the owl’s good spirits, Senior Camille Pedraza was named the defensive player of the week for the Atlantic Sun Conference, following their run. According to their coach Keith Schunzel, she was a major contribution to the team’s streak due to her great serve receives. Overall, I think this run was a great thing for Kennesaw volleyball and Kennesaw sports in general. With not much going on and with a few losses in the past few days with a few teams, this team’s fight for the championship really helped light the fire in players and maybe even a few fans as they try to get something going.
