I always get strange looks when I throw on some soulful, deep R&B jams. Girls, especially, seem thrown back when some hippie-looking, college-aged white guy plays some “mood music” – and honestly, I don’t blame em but I love being able to surprise them with it. The truth is, I’ve been an R&B enthusiast since the late 90’s/mid 2000’s, ever since the era of Usher, Ginuwine, Ja Rule, and the like. I grew up on 95.5 The Beat, waiting every night for the “5 AT 9”, hoping to hear some new rap and R&B hits before going to sleep.
That being said, my love of R&B never faded, but it certainly has evolved, just like the genre itself. Prominent artists like JMSN, Bryson Tiller, Sonder, and Xavier Omar, to name a few, are constantly changing the formula for what makes a smooth R&B cut, infusing their own personal flavor into each release. Late Night Vibes is here to showcase exactly that, the newer, up and coming face of R&B and how they’re continuing the original formula while adding their own takes on an ever-evolving genre.
