Shaky Knees is Atlanta’s annual indie and alternative music festival. Hosted in the heart of downtown Atlanta in Centennial Olympic Park, the festival features some of the biggest artists in mainstream music like Tame Impala, Phoenix and LCD Soundsystem, but also features some of the best budding talent in the music industry. I caught up with one such band who has only released one song in 2016.
Despite only having one project out, their debut single, “Loveless” has garnered attention from music buffs with 161,000 YouTube views, 3 million Spotify streams and special recognition from major publications including Noisey and the LA Times. The band goes by the name Lo Moon and is composed of three of the most talented newcomers in the game.
The band’s done interviews with a number of publications before, and one motif that appears in all of them is that they all say the band “seemingly came out of nowhere.”
“That’s probably pretty accurate,” said the band’s front man, Matt, with a laugh. “But also false at the same time. We’ve been working on this for five years.”
And the band’s hard work definitely shows. Their hit single clocks in at 7 minutes and 12 seconds and also features one of the most artistic and visually pleasing music videos. Created by famous music video director, Warren Fu known for with artists like Phoenix, Pharrell Williams and Aaliyah, the video take the viewer on a soothing and spiritual journey.
“We met him through a friend of a friend,” said the band mates. “We didn’t even call other directors.”
Shooting for the video was supposed to only be one day, but being the artistic perfectionist they are, Fu and the band spent five days shooting the video because of constant revisions.
The band’s record was also produced by Death Cab for Cutie guitarist and songwriter, Chris Walla. Matt recalls that working with Walla was an amazing experience and that having someone that was in a band produce the record went a long way.
Shaky Knees is Lo Moon’s first official festival, and the trio will also be performing at Governor’s ball, Lollapalooza and The Music Hall of Williamsburg. Before departing from the festival, the band hinted that there will be more music in June. Whether it’s a full length album or another single, we’re excited to see what Lo Moon has in store for the rest of 2017.
