This past weekend may have seemed normal to most people across the country but for sports fans it marked the start of professional football. This season is being looked at as one of the most anticipated seasons due to the huge offseason acquisitions and injuries. Some which include whether Robert Griffin the third is healthy enough to lead the Redskins after sustaining a torn ACL in the playoff game last year again the Seattle Seahawks. After seven months of intense rehab and hardcore training Robert was cleared to participate in training camp by famous surgeon Dr. James Andrews.
After being cleared to participate in team activities, Mike Shanninghan announced Robert as the starter for the Monday night game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The hype concerning Robert’s knee was finally coming to an end as the two teams were prepared to kick off. Before the offense for Washington could even take a snap, it was the defense that drew first blood after a backwards pass was thrown by Eagles quarterback Michael Vick leading to cornerback Deangelo Hall picking it up and scoring. On the next drive Robert finally got his chance to silence his critics yet he missed his opportunity to capitalize as the team fumbled in their own end zone costing them a safety. This gave Philly the momentum as Vick and wide receiver Desean Jackson connected in the end zone expanding their lead to fourteen points. With no rhythm in the first half from Washington’s offense they were in desperate need to put up points.
Hoping to get a fresh start in the third quarter Robert Griffin again made another poor decision by forcing an Interception. The eagles continued to take advantage or Roberts’s mistake as they again drove down the field leading to a connection from Vick to tight end Brent Celek. This seemed to be the nail in the coffin as Philly extended their lead to twenty one points. Being a strong competitor Robert didn’t lose hope driving his team down the field for twenty one unanswered points. This made Philly’s lead only by a touchdown which shifted the pressure in their direction. As the fourth quarter was underway Michael Vick lead his team down the field leading to a thirty yard run by Leshawn Mccoy. With one last opportunity to stay in the game Washington failed to convert on a 4th down play which cost them the game. Even though it was the first game question can be raised for concern if Robert Griffin will be healthy enough to continue to play as he finished the game throwing two interceptions. Being that Washington played on Monday they will have a short amount of time as they get ready to travel to Green Bay to face the Packers.
