Last week, I ventured to a sold out show at the Tabernacle for a band that is going to get big. I can feel it in my bones.
Twenty One Pilots consists of lead singer Tyler Joseph and drummer Josh Dun. These two hail from Ohio and have only been signed to their record label, Fueled by Ramen, since 2012.
Now, you must be thinking, what makes a singer and a drummer so special? There are so many bands that consist of that. However, this band has a bit of an advantage on all the others.
They usually start out their shows wearing ski masks and sometimes do minor wardrobe changes. Tyler not only sings, but raps pretty well. They both can play the piano and the drums. They can do back flips. They do choregraphed drum battles. They go into the crowd, and not just to the front row. Tyler crowd surfs a little bit while singing and Josh plays the drums IN the crowd. Yeah, you read that right; he plays the drums in the crowd.
So seeing this band live is not just a fantastic experience, but it backs up their art. While listening to their music, one can hear lyrics that many can relate to. These lyrics do not sugar coat the struggles people have in their lives, but face them head on. They also seem to embrace their differences, which they called being “weird”. There was one point during the concert where Tyler thanked the audience for loving the weird things they do and letting his journal become the lyrics listeners hear.
Listening to their music gives one a comforting feeling. A great deal of people feel alone in the world, and they address that you are not alone.
I honestly got a bit teary eyed during the last song of the concert when I saw many pieces of 8 by 11 white pieces of paper with the words “thank you” written on them. This band has touched so many lives, that their fans wanted to thank them for everything they have done.
