The Brooklyn Nets are just the newest NBA superteam on the block along with the like of the Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors not that long ago. Now with the term “Superteam” taking on its own meaning, I think it’s time to discuss why fans hate these so much.
First, there must be some clarification that not all fans hate superteams or pure dominance from a talented team. Generalizations are often false and this is no different. But there seems to be a portion of NBA fans that dread the thought of a team like the Brooklyn Nets.
The reason fans hate them is that they lack excitement. Sure you could love watching the Nets massacre their way through the Eastern conference and more than likely win the title just like we all believe. The one fact is that what happened at the end of the UCLA Vs. Gonzaga Final Four game will never happen in the NBA.
There will be no half-court game-winning shot or a new player that you need to take notice of. We all know the teams and we all know the players. There is no surprise. There not be a game that close and if there is, the following game won’t be. This is what the NBA is; predictable. March Madness and the NBA playoffs are so different they are almost different sports altogether.
Fans also hate superteams because part of the excitement of sports is not knowing who’s going to win. Upsets happen, but not in the NBA. If you can predict who the winner of the title will be at the beginning of the year and have no doubt then what’s the fun? An NBA superteam is the antithesis of parody and excitement. You know exactly what you will get from the Brooklyn Nets, a 2021 NBA Championship. We all know it, so what the point of even discussing it?
Seeing several of the top 15 players in the league team-up is always fun to watch but it quickly becomes boring. When Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, and Paul Pierce all landed with the Boston Celtics, there was no doubt about a championship. We had never seen 2 out of 3 top NBA players select the same team from free agency. That then spiraled to the Miami big three then the Warriors adding Kevin Durant. The Warriors built their team and won a championship without Durant but once he was on the team, the entire world knew who was going to the finals that year. That’s why fans hate superteams.
