After a two-year break, Brandi Carlile is back with her latest record, In These Silent Days. The album opens with a somber sounding track called “Right on Time.” Despite the sad nature of the song, Brandi Carlile’s vocals against the piano sound as powerful as ever. Not all tracks are somber though. The second song off of the album titled “You and Me On The Rock,” featuring Lucius, sounds much happier in comparison. Brandi Carlile and Lucius sing in harmony while a peppy percussion and guitar part play alongside them. In this song, elements of the country genre are present. To be more specific, the guitar in this song plays certain chords that easily bring the country sound to the forefront. One great aspect of this entire album is the combination of many elements from different genres. Certain songs like “Broken Horses” and “Mama Werewolf” borrow harmonies and chords that are synonymous with the country style. Other songs such as “Sinners, Saints, and Fools” and “When You’re Wrong” borrow elements from pop by using more percussion and even incorporating an electric guitar. All in all, this album was great. Brandi Carlile tells a story with each song. That quality of songwriting and storytelling is something that not a lot of today’s artists have. I recommend that people listen to this album. It will not disappoint.
