Dua Lipa’s new album, “Club Future Nostalgia” (Warner Records)

It’s safe to say that 2020 has been kind of a trash year that none of us saw coming. Because of the current pandemic, everything has either been postponed or cancelled. However, this pandemic has not stopped artists, such as Dua Lipa, from putting out long anticipated albums. The club edition of her Future Nostalgia album is different from typical remix albums. Each song transitions into the next without skipping a beat and the music itself is eerily reminiscent of dance tunes from the 80’s and 90’s. Going into the actual tracks, the album opens with a stellar remix of the title track, Future Nostalgia. What I enjoyed about this particular remix is that it does not overpower the song. In some ways, it compliments the track by reworking the bass line and giving Dua Lipa’s vocals their time to shine, which is a huge plus for me. As the album progresses, the 80’s and 90’s sound becomes more apparent. The second track, Cool shows this influence by having a heavy percussion part in the first few seconds and layering that same part with a synthesizer. This song can easily make the listener feel like they’re at a dance club in the 90’s. Overall, I give this album a 10/10. The remixes are incredible. The collaborations with artists such as Madonna, Missy Elliot, and Gwen Stefani truly make this album. While romance and heartbreak serve as the primary theme, this album does have an underlying theme of female empowerment, which is super awesome. One final thing about this album is that it makes listeners feel like they’re at an actual dance club. Even though most of us can’t go to clubs because of the pandemic, I think being able to feel like you’re at a place other than your house is something we all need right now.
