Our generation is all too familiar with Paramore. Their 2007 album Riot! introduced the needed female angst into the pop-emo scene dominated by bands such as Panic! At the Disco and led every kid from our generation to know all the words to “Misery Business.” As we grew up, they did too, with every consequent album following this slightly changing in its overall tone and radio appeal. Their later works such as “Ain’t It Fun” and “Still Into You” focused on a more pop appeal that steered away from the distorted guitars and edgy lyrics that garnered their original following. These radio hits kept them as household names but somewhat split the fanbase.  

When the group announced after a five-year hiatus that they would be releasing an album this year, it naturally gathered a lot of attention. It gathered even more attention when they announced that members from the early era of Paramore would be returning and that the sound would be “more guitar driven.”  

The album is much more guitar-driven than their synthpop-sounding predecessors, but not in the way that I quite imagined. Rather than the punk rock-inspired distortion and aggression, the album takes a more subtle approach with its guitars that make more of a layered playing field for Hayley’s strong voice. The tracks “The News” and “C’est Comme Ca” remind me of the sound of early Bloc Party records with its back-and-forth, punctual guitar riffs with a strong vocal motif. The instrumental from the fifth track “Big Man, Little Dignity” sounds like it is straight out of one of the past three records from The Strokes. The eighth track, “Liar” is my personal favorite because of its very ethereal and calm sound that balances the strategic guitar playing with Hayley’s naturally great voice. Despite this heavily inspired sound from other bands that dominated 2000s rock, it still holds its own identity, especially within Paramore’s discography. Shifting from the happier radio-friendly synthpop hits to a more indie, 2000s rock revival sound is a more fitting sound for the band and is enjoyable for Paramore fans who are looking for something new and have the 2000s nostalgia that they helped establish.
