On November 4th, 2013, the Arizona based band, The Maine, played a concert at The Masquerade in Atlanta. Before I dive into my extreme love for this band, I would like to give everyone a little back story. The Maine consists of  lead singer John O’Callaghan, rhythm guitarist Kennedy Brock, lead guitarist Jared Monaco, bassist Garrett Nickelsen, and drummer Pat Kirch. These five members have been together since 2007 and have released four albums. They  are in charge of an artist collective called 8123, which was created by them to ensure artistic creativity for anyone involved.

Now that everyone knows a little bit about the band, here are my thoughts on them and their concert. The Maine is my favorite band. I have been a huge fan of them since 2008, when I saw them on tour with All Time Low, Mayday Parade, and Every Avenue. Now don’t call me obsessive, but I have seen the band six times in the past five years. Every concert experience I have had has been amazing. Not only have they always been great live, but I have watched them grow as a band. The irony of it all is that as I have grown older the band has accommodated me. I am not necessarily saying that they did that purposely, but it worked out well! I have loved watching them progress musically throughout the years. Some people complain when a band advances with their sound or changes it up, and this is one of the few bands that did it right.

Obviously, I loved their concert because I have a personal connection with this band. When I say personal, I don’t mean I am best friends with them, but that their music has helped me through many tough times in my life. I am probably not the only fan who feels a connection with them. They always are so humble and kind to their fans, it amazes me. They stay after every show and meet as many people as they can. Last night, the lead singer even brought some fans who were in a band on stage and let them help finish a rendition of “Girls Do What They Want”. It was a moment that made me very happy as a fan and as a musician myself. They also always have a positive message to send to their fans, which usually is passion. It is quite amazing to hear a touring band encouraging people to pursue what they love.

The Maine is a band that everyone should check out. For more information go to: wearethemaine.net or 81twentythree.com.
