Recently, Russel Westbrook from the Houston Rockets was traded for John Wall of the Washington Wizards. This trade was shocking, but fans had a feeling that Westbrook probably would not return to Houston, after he and James Harden requested trades. The main question asked when trades occur throughout sports history is about the winner of the trade. In this case it may be too early to judge, but it is most definitely interesting.

This is because those who watch Wall and Westbrook play could argue that they have similar play styles. Both are point guards who depend on their athleticism and energy to score, as well as record a high number of assists. However, Westbrook wins this argument in statistics for having a better overall career average of points and assists than John Wall. What makes this interesting is that Houston made this trade, but it doesn’t really shake up the roster drastically or make it that much more appealing to James Harden. Wall will be the third all-star level point guard to play alongside Harden, so by now it may be right to assume the recipe of a star point guard with Harden does not work. Plus, Wall is coming off injury and has not played an NBA game in two seasons. It also does not help the situation knowing that Harden is now disinterested in giving the Rockets another chance as well.

On the other hand, the Wizards may have just gained some relevance again for the first time since 2017. While John Wall was a star in D.C., he was known for being injury prone, but Westbrook is praised for his durability along with his high level of intensity. Bradley Beal has been brought up in many trade rumors and has even gone viral for memes of his disappointed facial expressions this past season. Westbrook can possibly give him hope of making the playoffs and being a real contender in their conference. The Westbrook and Beal duo are an intriguing thought for basketball.

Overall, only time will tell what team won this trade. Houston attempted to regenerate Harden’s interest or avoid a re-build. Washington hopes to compete in the NBA Playoffs once again. There seems to be more positives towards the Wizards right now, but we’ll find out as the season progresses.
