Canadian R&B singer-songwriter Daniel Caesar released his independent studio album Freudian late 2017 and it is definitely a memorable one.  The album is full of ballads and really stripped down, raw soul music.  Caesar has said that his childhood and youth in the church heavily influence the overall sound of this album; and this is apparent through the unique use of piano-organs and church choirs on a number of the tracks.

Caesar’s voice is rich and soulful; and it has a similar sound to other great R&B singers such as John Legend and Ginuwine.  The purity of his tone can be heard clearly because of his decision to steer away from the “auto-tuning” that Toronto artists are known for pushing out.  His raw, expressive voice and musical style can be described as R&B, Soul, and Gospel all wrapped into one.

Tracks on this album include “Get You” featuring Kali Uchis, “We Find Love” and “Best Part” featuring H.E.R.; and the lyrics to the songs on this album are very vulnerable and honest.  These lyrics are for anyone who has ever loved, lost, or been hurt before.  Between Caesar’s soothing voice, touching lyrics, and soulful music, Freudian is definitely a 10/10; an album really worth listening to.
